A bit about the Artist and Photographer, Lou Rios

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and arrived on the Atherton Tablelands in 1978 with my Australian wife.

My art and photographic life began when a friend gave me a 35mm camera. I was twenty years old, and my life was immediately transformed. It was like reconnecting with a long-lost friend. I became obsessed with photographing everything and anything. I studied photography at university and then answered the call of the wild and began an unplanned photographic journey that took me to Hawaii, Micronesia, Guam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Java, Bali, and Australia. My camera was my travel companion.

2010 saw a new photographic art project using a 4×5 Linhoff medium format film camera. The overriding theme of the project was using medium format black and white film portrait photography. The project involved making portraits of some of the remarkable people who have made Atherton Tablelands, Queensland their home. I decided to use a vintage film camera that suited such a historic social project.
